The Hazardous Wastes Operation and Emergency Response training course is necessary for a myriad of job functions and responsibilities. As HAZWOPER is Congress-regulated legislation, certification is also mandatory for most of the positions included in HAZWOPER standards. In Nevada, as in most other states, people who work in environments in which they are exposed to hazardous materials are the ones who need to have training. Essentially, these are jobs that handle operations that require treatment, storage, handling, or disposal of hazardous waste and substances. In Nevada, a course completion card can be obtained by participating in a 40-hour or 24-hour HAZWOPER training period and finishing the final exam thereafter. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulates employee HAZWOPER training in Nevada, same as in all other states. However, Nevada’s OSHA-approved State plan covers private and state/local government workplaces.
As different workplaces don’t have the same dangers, a number of different training courses exist to handle different types of hazards that could damage an employee’s health or the health of a customer. All employees working in any of the relevant industries are therefore required to partake in a multi-hour training plan in which they will learn about and prove their knowledge of health and safety regulations and OSHA standards. The initial HAZWOPER courses

HAZWOPER 40-Hour Training

The workers required to undertake this course are expected to experience exposure to hazardous substances at or above the Permissible Exposure Limits. HAZWOPER training is a preparation for cleanup and emergency response workers on how to operate safely during a variety of scenarios that involve hazardous substances. These training courses cover practices, policies, and procedures that will reduce the risk of illness and injury related to harmful exposures to hazardous materials on the worksite.
While this course does satisfy OSHA requirements for the education portion of the HAZWOPER training course, students also need three days of in-person training which an experienced and trained supervisor leads. It is the employer’s responsibility to provide field training, which includes hands-on experience with personal protective equipment and, as well as an overview of site-specific safety risks.
HAZWOPER 24-Hour Training
These courses are designed for workers at uncontrolled hazardous waste operations who need 24 hours of HAZWOPER training. Their exposure to hazardous substances will not be at or above the Permissible Exposure Limits. These training courses will teach workers how to recognize and keep away from the common risks that are related to hazardous materials. It includes the subjects of PPE (personal protective equipment), decontamination, hazard communication, site emergencies, and general workplace safety topics such as fall protection.
While this course does satisfy OSHA requirements for the education portion of the HAZWOPER training course, students also need at least one day of in-person training, which is led by an experienced and trained supervisor. Your employer’s responsibility is to provide on-site training that includes hands-on experience with PPE and an overview of site-specific hazards.
Annual Refresher 8-hour Training
Additionally, OSHA requires employees, managers, and supervisors who complete initial HAZWOPER training to take an 8-hour HAZWOPER Refresher course each year to keep themselves up-to-date with key policies and safe practices. The initial HAZWOPER training course certification remains valid for 12 months. To maintain the certification, you will be required to complete the 8-hour HAZWOPER Refresher course annually. In case you miss the deadline, you may be required to retake the initial course.
Additional OSHA training and certification
With the Occupational Safety and Health Act of the 1970s, OSHA seeks to ensure safe working environments for workers who handle hazardous materials and face dangerous tasks during their work hours. The OSHA 10-hour courses are not the same for all industries as most demand their own regulations and safety nets.
